NATIONWIDE SERIES – SAM’S TOWN 300, SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 4:15 P.M. ON ESPN2
New Driver-Crew Chief Combinations Breed Success
All four drivers currently in the top four in NASCAR Nationwide Series standings after the season’s first two races have one thing in common – new crew chiefs this season. Sam Hornish Jr. and Justin Allgaier are tied for the points lead heading to Las Vegas with Greg Erwin and Scott Zipadelli manning their war wagons, respectively. Brian Scott, third in points, is working this year with Phil Gould, while Elliott Sadler (fourth in points) is teamed up with Chris Gayle. Sadler (third), Allgaier (eighth) and Hornish (ninth) all finished in the top 10 in last year’s Las Vegas race.
Championship Contenders Dillon and Bayne Need Vegas Boost
After Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won last season’s race at Las Vegas in the No. 6 Ford, Trevor Bayne is hoping to duplicate Stenhouse’s success by wheeling the No. 6 to Victory Lane this weekend, where he hopes to improve upon his 11th-place position in the standings. Austin Dillon, last year’s third-place finisher in the final standings, is also banking on a strong finish at Vegas to boost him from ninth place back into the championship conversation. Bayne and Dillon both had strong performances in last year’s Vegas event, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively.
Busch Returns Home With Winless Streak No More
By winning last Saturday’s Dollar General 200 Fueled by AmeriGas at Phoenix, Kyle Busch put an end to his 24-race winless streak in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. The win, his first in the series since the 2011 Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond, increased his series-leading wins total to 52, three more than Mark Martin (49). With the series headed to his hometown of Las Vegas this weekend, Busch is hoping to capture the checkered flag and start a new streak of consecutive race wins, on a track where he hasn’t won in nine visits.
