NEWTON, Iowa — Everyone at or near the front of the pack yearned for one last caution.
Everyone except Chase Elliott.
As
the laps wound down in Sunday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series 3M 250 at Iowa
Speedway, Elliott confidently ran second — fully stocked with enough
fuel to track down and pass leader Chris Buescher because of late race
pit strategy.
Then, the strategy went poof.
The
caution waved with two to go and Buescher took full advantage, surging
low to the lead and the win in a thrilling green-white-checkered finish
at the 7/8-mile track.
Elliott had pitted when of the leaders stayed out after a Lap 177 caution.
Buescher — who led 95 laps — received fresh tires and the needed fuel to power to Victory Lane for the first time this season.
Elliott
settled for second. Erik Jones, who started 35th, raced to third, with
Brian Scott and Ryan Blaney completing the top five.
Ty Dillon, who entered the weekend atop the point standings, finished 14th.
