Newest Joe Gibbs Racing driver clocks 192.757 mph at Daytona
DAYTONA
BEACH, Fla. -- Matt Kenseth, the newest addition to the Joe Gibbs
Racing stable, was fastest in the opening session of NASCAR Preseason
Thunder testing Thursday as the sixth generation of Sprint Cup Series
cars made their 2013 debut at Daytona International Speedway.
Kenseth,
who left Roush Fenway Racing in the offseason after a 13-year tenure,
turned a lap of 192.757 mph in the No. 20 JGR Toyota. That edged the
practice lap of 192.736 mph from second-fastest Marcos Ambrose in a
Richard Petty Motorsports Ford.
Danica Patrick, who will embark on her first full-time season at NASCAR's highest level in 2013, languished near the bottom of the speed charts for much of the three-hour session with a drivetrain vibration. With the issue remedied, Patrick shot up the list to log the third-fastest lap at 192.583 mph.
Defending Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski was 31st fastest out of 34 cars to turn laps in the morning session, nearly 3 mph off Kenseth's pace.
The first day of the three-day test will conclude with a four-hour afternoon session, starting at 1 p.m. ET Thursday.
