Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup: Homestead-Miami Speedway

·        Homestead-Miami Speedway has been a part of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup since the playoffs’ inception in 2004. This season the track will host its 10th Chase event.

·        The winner of the Homestead-Miami Speedway Chase race has gone on to win the championship during the Chase era once: Tony Stewart (2011).

·        Greg Biffle leadsthe series in Chase race wins at HMS with three (2004-2006); followed by Carl Edwards with two (2008, 2010).

·        The worst finish in a Chase race by the eventual series champion at HMS is 15th (three times), Tony Stewart in 2005, Jimmie Johnson in 2008 and Brad Keselowski in 2012.  

·        Chase Contenders have won seven of the nine previous Chase races at HMS. The only non-Chase contender to win a Homestead-Miami Speedway Chase race was Greg Biffle (2004 and 2006).

·        Four of the 2013 Chase Contenders are former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase race winners at HMS: Greg Biffle (three), Carl Edwards (two), Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon (one each).

·        The average Chase race finish by the eventual series champion at HMS is 8.2. In four of the nine previous Chase races at HMS the eventual series champion has finished in the top five.

·        Roush Fenway Racing leads the series in Chase race wins at Homestead-Miami Speedway with six, including five consecutive: Greg Biffle (2004-2006), Matt Kenseth (2007) and Carl Edwards (2008).

·        Ford leads the series in Chase wins at HMS with six; followed by Chevrolet with two.

·        The most dominant performance by a Chase race winner at HMS is Carl Edward’s victory in 2010. He posted a Perfect Driver Rating of 150.0 and led 190 of the 267 laps (71.1% of his laps completed) - most by a Chase race winner at the track.

·        Clinch Scenario: Jimmie Johnson has to finish better than 23rd without leading a lap, 24th or better while leading a lap, and 25th or better while leading the most laps.

·        Jimmie Johnson has competed 122 times on 1.5/1.54-mile tracks in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and has finished worse than 23rd a total of  21 times in his career (17.2%). Of those 21 finishes worse than 23rd-place on 1.5/1.54-mile tracks, four have come at Homestead-Miami Speedway, including each of the last two. Johnson finished 32nd in 2011 and 36th in 2012 at HMS.

·        Matt Kenseth trails Jimmie Johnson by 28 points. In their head to head career, Kenseth has out-pointed Johnson by 28 points…

o   31 of 434 at all NASCAR Sprint Cup point races

o   2 of 35 in 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup point races (8/24 Bristol and 9/7 Richmond)

o   2 of 12 at Homestead-Miami Speedway NASCAR Sprint Cup races (2005 and 2011)

·        Kevin Harvick trails Johnson by 34 points. In their head-to-head career, Harvick has out-pointed Johnson by 35 points (Harvick does not own the tiebreaker)…

o   7 of 433 at all NASCAR Sprint Cup point races

o   1 of 35 in 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup point races (8/18 Michigan)

o   0 of 12 at Homestead-Miami Speedway NASCAR Sprint Cup races (best is 33 points in 2005)
