NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston told the Sirius Speedway radio show on Friday that the sanctioning body is considering make a rather significant change to the Car of Tomorrow and to some of its rules.
Perhaps the biggest change is the possibility of doing away with the rear wing on the new car and bringing back the spoiler that was a feature of the old car. Poston told the radio show that after a meeting with 14 drivers, all 14 told NASCAR officials they wanted the spoiler in order to create more downforce and make the car handle better.
He also said that NASCAR will announce some rule changes during the annual Media Tour next week in Charlotte. He declined to go into specifics but the changes are believed to involve eliminating two rules that have caused controversy at Talladega. The yellow line at the bottom of the track might no longer be out of bounds at the two superspeedways. Regan Smith had a win taken away from him in 2008 after he passed Tony Stewart below the yellow line at Talladega.
And last year NASCAR cracked down on bump-drafting in the turns at Talladega, a rule blamed by many fans for making the race boring. But that rule might go out the window too.
"We're going to let the drivers drive," Poston told the radio show.
