Bayne Honors Tennessee Sports Icon at Bristol

NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES
Bayne Honors Tennessee Sports Icon at Bristol
The NASCAR Nationwide Series’ return to Bristol marks a big homecoming for Trevor Bayne for numerous reasons. The Knoxville native and self-proclaimed Tennessee Volunteer fan returns to the site of his first NASCAR national series start in 2009 to pilot an orange-themed “We Back Pat” paint scheme honoring longtime Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt. Summitt, the all-time winning coach in NCAA basketball history, retired in April of this year after being diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer’s disease in 2011. It will also mark the first time Bayne has competed in the series since March, returning behind the wheel of the No. 60 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing. He finished inside the top 10 three times in five previous starts this season.
Hornish Hoping To Ride Hot Streak Into Bristol
Sam Hornish Jr. is playing Elliott Sadler’s game of catch me if you can as the NASCAR Nationwide Series comes to Bristol with momentum on his side. On the strength of 10 consecutive finishes in the top 10, Hornish has moved within 22 points of the lead, tied for second in the standings with reigning series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Clearly, practice makes perfect. Hornish Jr. is pulling double duty every week, running both the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. The increased seat time seems to have translated into success – and possibly, a future NASCAR Nationwide title. Hornish may face his biggest challenge on Friday night in the Food City 250, a race in which he has never registered a top-10 finish.
More To Watch:
March Bristol winner Elliott Sadler leads the series points standings followed by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (-22), Sam Hornish Jr. (-22), Austin Dillon (-35) and Justin Allgaier (-68) with 11 races remaining in 2012.
Brad Keselowski will attempt the triple this weekend competing in all three national series races. Additional double-duty drivers running in both NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Sprint Cup races include Danica Patrick, Sam Hornish Jr, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne, Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano and Joe Nemechek. Nelson Piquet Jr. – most recent winner in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series – will return behind the wheel of the No. 30 Turner Motorsports entry in the Food City 250.
