Speedweeks

 February 11, 2013

Speedweeks at Daytona is finally here signaling the opening of NASCAR’s 2013 season. Perhaps most significant is the introduction of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Gen-6 race car, which will make its competitive debut in Saturday’s Sprint Unlimited, a non-points race for 2012 Coors Light Pole winners and the race’s previous winners.

Gen-6 will be in action three times – the Sprint Unlimited plus a pair of Budweiser Duel qualifying events – before seeing championship action in the 55th Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Fans will play a big part in the Sprint Unlimited, voting on the event’s format and starting lineup.

Qualifying to set the front row starting positions for the Daytona 500 takes place on Sunday. That’s just the first round in setting the field for the Great American Race.

Speedweeks welcomes a new event on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 18-19. The UNOH Battle at the Beach features competitors from all of NASCAR’s non-national divisions from the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West along with modified and international touring stars. They’ll race on a temporary oval fronting the speedway’s Superstretch grandstand.

Annual media day activities – featuring more than 50 drivers outlining their 2013 plans to print, broadcast and Internet media – take place on Thursday in Daytona International Speedway’s Daytona 500 Club.
