STP GAS BOOSTER 500

NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES – STP GAS BOOSTER 500, SUNDAY, APRIL 7, 1 P.M. EDT ON FOX

Junior New Standings Leader As Series Takes Break
Dale Earnhardt shows no sign of slowing down. Five races into the season Earnhardt has posted a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series-best five top-10 finishes including Sunday’s second-place performance at Auto Club Speedway. He also leads the standings by 12 points over former No. 1 Brad Keselowski.Earnhardt last led the points after Pocono Raceway’s second race last August. It marks the first time Earnhardt has headed the standings in two consecutive seasons.

For Keselowski, All Good Things Come To An End
Banished to a rear-of-the field start after a pre-qualifying engine change, Brad Keselowski was the proverbial Yo-Yo on a string. He overcame a wall slap and a pit road speeding penalty to still stand fifth on the Auto Club 400’s final restart. Keselowski’s luck soured, however, when the engine in his No. 2 Penske Racing Ford overheated knocked him out of contention for the race win ending both his one-week stint atop the points and a season-opening run of four straight top-five finishes.

Easter Weekend A Much-Needed Break For NASCAR Teams
Easter Week is a time for family as well as for teams to reflect and reload following five consecutive weeks of competition that has seen the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crisscross the country twice and race the new Gen-6 car on five different track configurations. The schedule resumes April 7 with the STP Gas Booster 500 at historic Martinsville Speedway, a flat, 0.526-mile short track.

Top 12 Features Variety After Season’s First Five Races
Surprises among the top 12 following the Auto Club 400 are few. Paul Menard (eighth), Joey Logano (ninth) and Sunoco rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (12th) are the only occupants without at least one Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup™ appearance. Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Roush Fenway Racing each have three driver entries; Penske Racing two and Richard Childress Racing one. If you’re counting, that’s five Fords, four Chevrolets and three Toyotas.

Resurgent Busch Brothers Making 2013 Statements
Don’t look now but here come the Busch brothers. Kyle Busch’s Auto Club 400 victory – his 25th in series competition – broke a 31-race winless drought. Sixth in points, Busch is the highest-ranked of three Joe Gibbs Racing drivers who have collectively led 587 of the 1,483 laps run. Former series champion Kurt Busch collected his second consecutive top-five finish in California, the first back-to-back top fives for Denver-based Furniture Row Racing. The elder Busch stands 13th in the standings.
